April 23

What happened on April 23?

The first-ever YouTube video was published in 2005, titled “Me at the zoo”. It was published by YouTube’s co-founder Jawed Karim. And filmed at… yes, you guessed it: the zoo!

Another media-streaming giant celebrates today. Sweden’s Spotify was founded in 2006.

It is also World Book and Copyright Day. Coincidence? Don’t think so.

Also a ‘first’ and not streamed, we celebrate the first baseball game at Chicago’s Wrigley Field in 1914. Back then, it was still known as Weeghman Park.

And we have some great news for all you party people because we have a huge line-up of famous names celebrating their birthday today!

The name Minoru Shirota (*1899) might not ring a bell. But his little Yakult bottles most likely do, right? Dutch speed skater Sven Kramer (*1986) heard so many bells signaling the last lap of his races that they must be the soundtrack of his life.

To add a few tunes to the soundtrack of your own life, we invite Ukrainian composer Sergei Prokofiev (*1891) to conduct the orchestra.

And British painter William Turner (*1775) can make some lovely masterpieces of TV-screen icons Shirley Temple (*1928), John Oliver (*1977), and Dev Patel (*1990).

If you want to send this page to a friend using e-mail, then please say a “Thank you” to software designer Ray Tomlinson (*1941). He is the man who first used the ‘@’ symbol and sent the first-ever e-mail message. What a legend.
