What happened on April 25?
Fabulous jazz singer Ella Fitzgerald (*1917) was born in Newport News on this musical day.
We would love to hear her version of “La Marseillaise“. This French masterpiece was composed by Claude Joseph Rouget de Lisle and is certainly one of the world’s most famous national anthems.
Where the French are great at composing anthems, the Germans thrive at manufacturing cars. Iconic car brand Porsche was founded in 1931.
To add a bit of Dutch flavour to the mix, we celebrate the birthdays of football legend Johan Cruijff (*1947) and painter Karel Appel (*1921).
And the United States of America are represented by actors Al Pacino (*1940) and Renee Zellweger (*1969), who join Mrs. Fitzgerald.
Our highly useful fact of the day also comes from the states, where the first practical solar cell was publicly demonstrated by Bell Telephone Laboratories in 1954.
